Houseplants

Houseplants are plants that tolerate indoor light, container roots, and household temperatures. Many are tropical understory plants, epiphytes, or drought-adapted plants.

KindExamplesWhy people grow them
Foliage plantsMonstera, pothos, ficus, aglaonemaLeaves, texture, low flower dependence
Flowering houseplantsOrchids, anthurium, African violetLong-lasting blooms indoors
Palms and indoor treesParlor palm, dracaena, rubber plantHeight and structure
Trailing plantsHoya, string of hearts, philodendronShelves, baskets, vertical softness
Air plants and epiphytesTillandsia, staghorn fern, orchidsMounted or soil-free displays
Succulents and cactiAloe, jade, haworthia, cactusBright windows and dry care

Light is the limiting factor indoors. Plants sold as low-light tolerant still grow better near a window or under a grow light. Watering should follow the potting mix and root system, not a fixed weekly schedule.
