Flowering Houseplants

Flowering houseplants need enough light and energy to bloom indoors. Some flower year-round in good conditions, while others bloom seasonally.

Plant kindExamplesBloom trigger
OrchidsPhalaenopsis, dendrobium, cattleyaBright filtered light, mature growth, temperature cues
Aroids with bractsAnthurium, peace lilyBright indirect light and steady moisture
GesneriadsAfrican violet, streptocarpus, lipstick plantBright light and evenly moist mix
Holiday plantsChristmas cactus, poinsettia, cyclamenDay length, cool nights, seasonal rest
Bulbs indoorsAmaryllis, paperwhite, cliviaStored bulb energy and dormancy timing
Fragrant plantsGardenia, jasmine, hoyaHigh light, humidity, and careful watering

Most indoor bloom failures come from low light, unstable watering, or skipping the plant’s rest period. Move flowering plants closer to bright windows, feed lightly during active growth, and avoid repotting into an oversized pot.
