About Christmas Cactus

Schlumbergera truncata is a moderate-growing succulent in the Cactaceae family. It reaches around 30 cm tall and 50 cm wide at maturity, with evergreen foliage. Pink, red and white flowers appear in autumn and winter.

Where to grow Christmas Cactus

Christmas Cactus suits subtropical and warm-temperate climates and grows best in part shade or morning sun. It is frost tender, so protect it from hard frosts or grow it in a sheltered spot or pot. It also is a sought-after collector's plant.

Soil & planting

Christmas Cactus does best in free-draining soil. Plant into well-prepared ground, firm the soil around the roots and water deeply to settle it in.

Watering & feeding

Christmas Cactus handles dry conditions well once established. Feed as new growth begins, following the rate on a balanced garden fertiliser. Keep a newly planted specimen evenly watered through its first season; established plants can then follow the water needs above.

Pruning & care

Prune Christmas Cactus after flowering to keep it compact and encourage the next flush of blooms. For most gardens, maintenance is low maintenance.

Using Christmas Cactus in the garden

Christmas Cactus earns its place for hanging baskets and pots and courtyard containers. It is equally at home in the ground or a large pot on a balcony or courtyard.

Companion planting & design

Christmas Cactus sits most comfortably beside plants adapted to very drought tolerant and subtropical climate. A small cluster gives stronger visual impact than isolated plants scattered through the garden.

Good to know

It is regarded as non-toxic and pet-safe. It is thornless and easy to handle.
