About Zebra Grass

Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus' is an fast-growing ornamental grass in the Poaceae family. It reaches around 1.8 m tall and 1.2 m wide at maturity, with deciduous and variegated foliage. Pink and cream green flowers appear in autumn.

Where to grow Zebra Grass

Zebra Grass suits warm-temperate, cool-temperate and Mediterranean climates and grows best in full sun. It is frost hardy and shrugs off cold winters.

Soil & planting

Zebra Grass does best in clay and free-draining soil. Dig in plenty of compost before planting, water in well, and mulch to keep roots cool.

Watering & feeding

Zebra Grass is regular, moderate watering. A feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser keeps growth strong. In its first year, water deeply once or twice a week to settle the roots in, then taper off as it establishes.

Pruning & care

Prune Zebra Grass after flowering to keep it compact and encourage the next flush of blooms. Overall it is low maintenance.

Using Zebra Grass in the garden

Zebra Grass earns its place for a feature or specimen planting and cut flowers for the vase.

Companion planting & design

For a cohesive, low-care bed, pair Zebra Grass with other plants that enjoy the same regular, moderate watering and warm-temperate climate. Group three or five together for impact rather than dotting single plants through the garden.
