About Spartan Juniper
Juniperus 'Spartan' is a fast-growing tree in the Cupressaceae family. It reaches around 4.5 m tall and 1 m wide at maturity, with evergreen foliage.
Where to grow Spartan Juniper
Spartan Juniper suits Mediterranean, warm-temperate and cool-temperate climates and grows best in full sun. It is frost hardy and shrugs off cold winters. It also tolerates salt-laden coastal winds and is a genuinely water-wise choice.
Soil & planting
Spartan Juniper does best in free-draining and sandy soil. Plant into well-prepared ground, firm the soil around the roots and water deeply to settle it in. For a screen, space plants about 60 cm apart.
Watering & feeding
Spartan Juniper performs well with relatively little water once established. Feed as new growth begins, following the rate on a balanced garden fertiliser. During the first growing season, water deeply whenever the upper soil begins to dry, then reduce the frequency as roots establish.
Pruning & care
Tip-prune Spartan Juniper in spring to maintain a dense, shapely habit. It clips well, so trim two or three times a year for a formal finish. For most gardens, maintenance is low maintenance.
Using Spartan Juniper in the garden
Spartan Juniper earns its place for a fast screen or informal hedge, a feature or specimen planting and clipping into topiary.
Companion planting & design
Spartan Juniper sits most comfortably beside plants adapted to happy on low water and Mediterranean climate. A small cluster gives stronger visual impact than isolated plants scattered through the garden.
Good to know
It is regarded as non-toxic and pet-safe.
