About Spartan Juniper
Juniperus 'Spartan' is a fast-growing tree in the Cupressaceae family. It reaches around 4.5 m tall and 1 m wide at maturity, with evergreen foliage.
Where to grow Spartan Juniper
Spartan Juniper suits Mediterranean, warm-temperate and cool-temperate climates and grows best in full sun. It is frost hardy and shrugs off cold winters. It also tolerates salt-laden coastal winds and is a genuinely water-wise choice.
Soil & planting
Spartan Juniper does best in free-draining and sandy soil. Dig in plenty of compost before planting, water in well, and mulch to keep roots cool. For a screen, space plants about 60 cm apart.
Watering & feeding
Spartan Juniper is happy on low water, so once its roots are down it needs little supplementary water. A feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser keeps growth strong. In its first year, water deeply once or twice a week to settle the roots in, then taper off as it establishes.
Pruning & care
Tip-prune Spartan Juniper in spring to maintain a dense, shapely habit. It clips well, so trim two or three times a year for a formal finish. Overall it is low maintenance.
Using Spartan Juniper in the garden
Spartan Juniper earns its place for a fast screen or informal hedge, a feature or specimen planting and clipping into topiary.
Companion planting & design
For a cohesive, low-care bed, pair Spartan Juniper with other plants that enjoy the same happy on low water and Mediterranean climate. Group three or five together for impact rather than dotting single plants through the garden.
Good to know
It is regarded as non-toxic and pet-safe.
